Natural England has the responsibility to promote access, recreation and public wellbeing for the benefit of today’s and future generations.

The natural environment provides people with a range of benefits. Health and wellbeing are two of the most important. Increasing levels of physical activity is a national priority for improving people’s health and the natural environment provides many opportunities.

Visits to the countryside or open space in urban areas are already an important source of recreation for around 50 per cent of the population, while 20 per cent of adults in England are actively engaged with the natural environment as members of conservation and recreation organisations.

The challenge for Natural England is to build on this interest and translate it into greater levels of support, resources and action for the natural environment.
